Mei Wah (Li) Gin

July 10, 1936 ~ May 20, 2018 (age 81)

Mei Gin, loving wife and mother, passed away on this week of heart failure at Garfield Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.  She was born in the small village of Kai Ping in Guangdong, China to Hua Ji Yu and Ce Yun Li.  The oldest of four children, her sister Fay Wah Gin and her two younger brothers, Tiez Heng Li and Tie Jie Li.  Mei left China, as a young girl, to The United States of America in search of a better life for her family.  She first left for Hong Kong and worked there for a few years, sending money home to her mother until she decided to strive for a bigger opportunity in the United States.
Mei married John who served in the United States Army during World War 2.  They lovingly lived their lives together in California, moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles where they had their only son, Andrew, whom she adored more than anything.  They laid their foundation in Los Angeles where John worked as a chef and Mei worked as a seamstress.  When John passed away, she never quite recovered from the loss but remained loyal to his memory.
Mei never stopped sending money home to her family in China and spent decades sponsoring her brothers, sister and mother to come to the United States. Through years of hard labor, she successfully achieved her goal of bringing her entire family from China to the United States where she housed and financed them for many years until they to were able to build lives of their own.  Now they are all homeowners with beautiful children who are now grown with careers such as accountants, attorneys, engineers, actors, etc.  She loved each and everyone of her nieces and nephews and was so proud of all their achievements.
As much as Mei loved her extended family, her dedication was to her son, Andrew, who she loved unconditionally.  One of the happiest days of her life was when she also gained a daughter as he wed Rosie in the summer of 2009.  She now had two children!  She loved Rosie like no other and would always ask her son how she was doing, if she had been fed?  Nobody but Rosie could bring a smile to her face like she did.
Mei Gin lived a simple life and surrounded herself by family whom she loved very much.  Her son and daughter-in-law took her to the finest restaurants and bought her the nicest gifts but none of that mattered to her, all she cared about was the time she got to spend with them.  Now as Mei joins her husband, John, she will rest peacefully knowing that she was loved by so many and that her legacy will live on in so many others.
